With the incredible cameras on phones today and easy-to-use editing tools, anyone can create films. The only thing missing? Knowing a few tricks of the trade!

In this course, students will learn how to turn their fun and creative stories into films that truly pop! AND - we’ll make it fun and easy through our master instructors guiding them every step of the way.

How to Capture a Scene

We'll get into the fundamentals of capturing a scene, looking into the fundamentals of composition, lighting, and sound.

Editing

Capturing shots for your scenes is only half of the equation. Editing will help you create smooth, compelling scenes. We'll learn the basics of how to cut, where to cut, and how to add transitions and various effects.

Performance

Assuming we're acting in our film, or we're using friends, family or other students to act with us, how do we make sure the performances make our story pop? We'll get into some basics of acting and working with talent to bring out their best.

Sound Design

Soundtracks can make or break a film. We'll learn the fundaments of adding soundtracks to create the emotional impact we're looking for in our scenes.

Adding Spit and Polish

By now you'll have captured all of your scenes. We will spend this week refining your masterpiece, providing time to work and plenty of individual attention.

Will the course be recorded?

Yes! All sessions are recorded with captions and will be available within 48 hours after the live class.

What age is this course best for?

This course is designed for ages 10 and up, but the ideas we explore are meaningful at any age. Younger children may enjoy joining with a parent, and teens and adults often find the content just as fascinating.

What’s the time commitment?

Plan for 1 hour of live class each week, plus 10–30 minutes a day for light reflection, journaling, or hands-on exploration.

What materials will we need?

You’ll just need access to Zoom, a printer (for optional journal pages), and a notebook or binder to collect reflections and drawings. We’ll send everything else digitally.
