How is JOY different from HAPPINESS?

Thankfully, there is a part of ourselves that is naturally joyful. You see it in young children all the time.

But joy and happiness, though they sound like synonyms, couldn’t be more different biologically speaking.

Happiness is conditional and stimulates the “stress" or "flight or fight” response, whereas joy is unconditional, and stimulates the parasympathetic nervous system and reduces stress.

However, over time there are two factors that program us away from our joyful essence:

#1. Mirror Neurons

Scientists have found a group of brain cells that activate when we see someone feeling an emotion like happiness, fear, anger, or sadness. This helps us feel the same emotion and understand their feelings.

#2 Negativity Bias

Studies show that negative experiences, including negative thoughts, emotions, and trauma, affect us more strongly than positive or neutral ones. It's called the "negativity bias" which helped our ancestors to survive.

But with the advent of social media, the algorithms are rewarded if they can hold your attention, and so a new phenomenon called doomscrolling has captured the human imagination. The overall impact typically makes people feel extra anxious, depressed, and isolated.
